2017 Healthcare App Design Challenge

Theme: Putting Patients First:

Despite the significant increase in the use of technology in our daily lives, most of us still interact with the health care industry in the same way we did decades ago. It’s hard to understand why the technology that allows us to find the nearest, highly rated Italian restaurant, easily transfer money from our bank account to someone in South America, or schedule an exotic vacation thousands of miles away, isn’t able to supply access to our healthcare data wherever its needed, or help us better navigate the maze of our healthcare system.

While almost all hospitals and physician offices allow patients to view their data electronically, patients also need to be able to share their data readily and rapidly, easily supply data on the outcome of their care and be able to leverage technology that provides rapid, cost effective advice on managing their health.  What are some of the emerging technologies and approaches that help put the patient needs first?

Your Challenge:

Your challenge is to design a healthcare application that puts patients first and improves their access to healthcare and quality of care. Please see the link below for sample use cases that illustrate three technologies that help put patient’s interests at the center of the care delivery process.  Your team is free to use them as “food for thought” on your project or propose something entirely different that helps ensure the status and needs of the patient are efficiently communicated to and understood by the care team.  Perhaps you have an idea on how to ensure social data about the patient to be better integrated with the patient’s medical data, to ensure these factors are taken into consideration when planning care.  What about the behavioral health status of a patient and its effect on the patient’s medical health and ability to remain healthy and/or recover from illness?  How could the mind-body continuum be better represented and understood by the care team?  It’s up to your team to decide how to use technology to provide greater benefit for the patient.  We look forward to the discussion and learning from you!!
